Project Lifesaver
Locating the missing and wandering, and
providing peace of mind.
A partnership of the Port Clinton Lions
Club
Magruder Hospital
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office
St. Vincent / MUO/ St. Rita's Life Flight

Almost 50% of the missing and wandering will perish if they are not
located within 24 hours...

PROJECT  LIFESAVER is an active response to the problem of locating
people who may not be able to find their way home - before they become
victims. The average rescue time is less than 20 minutes.

A lost person with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia is unaware of his
or her situation - they do not call out for help and do not respond to people
calling out to them. Nearly half of these missing and wandering will die if
they are not located within 24 hours.

The Technology
The PROJECT LIFESAVER transmitter wristband is more than a passive
ID wristband. It is a one-ounce, battery-operated radio wrist transmitter
that emits an automatic tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. The
signal can be tracked over several miles on the ground by members of the
Ottawa County Sheriff's Office or from the air by a helicopter from St.
Vincent/ MUO/ St. Rita's Life Flight. As each wristband has a unique radio
frequency, the PROJECT LIFESAVER search team can positively locate
and identify a person who has wandered away from home or a care facility
using a specially designed radio receiver. People who use the services of
the PROJECT LIFESAVER program wear a personalized wristband that
emits a constant tracking signal. Specially trained search teams have
reduced the time it takes to locate a person missing from hours and days
to minutes.

Benefits of PROJECT LIFESAVER
  • Peace of mind - a wandering person can be located in minutes
  • Loved ones are not subjected to hours of darkness, poor weather
    and / or predators
  • More reliable than GPS tracking
  • Trained rescuers approach calmly and safely return the wanderer
  • Saves thousands of taxpayer dollars
  • Lightweight, easy to wear bracelet
  • Help is immediate

Community volunteers and members of the Sheriff's Office are trained to
enroll people, maintain equipment and in rescue operations. The
PROJECT LIFESAVER team knows how to approach a person with
Alzheimer's disease or related disorder, gain their trust and put them at
ease for the trip home.
